Regaine is the most effective over-the-counter treatment for hereditary hair loss currently available in the UK. It is based on the drug Minoxidil and come in either a topical solution or a foam. Clinical studies have shown that Regaine Foam will stop hereditary hair loss for 9 out of 10 men when used twice a day for 4 months.
Regular Strength Solution (for men) and Regular Strength Gel which were 2% minoxidil formulations for men have been discontinued. The Foam may be a relatively new product but its topical form has been used by men and women since 1988 and has already helped millions of stop their hereditary baldness.
*The success rate for these products have been measured in studies of people using the products as recommended over a 4 month period and experienced either no more hair loss or regrowth.
Whether it is the Foam or the Solution you need to apply it to your scalp twice a day. It is recommended that you make it a part of your morning and evening grooming routine as you will need to apply it every day for as long as you want to keep your hair. If you stop using it you will lose any hair you have kept or recovered due to using it within 2 months. So though it is no a big deal if you miss one day, forgetting to take it with you an a long holiday for example could have dire consequences for you hair.
What Is It Made Of?
I’ve done a little research to try and help us all understand this answer, so I thought I’d share at least a piece of that here. First of all, Regaine is made up of several ingredients:
- Minoxidil (active ingredient)
- Propylene glycol
- Purified water
As you can see from the list, it’s pretty simple and straightforward. The Minoxidil is what affects the hair growth and helps to get us back to, or keep us with, a nice looking head of hair. But you might wonder like I did, what Minoxidil actually is.
This medication is like many things that happen in the medical world. The benefit to hair growth was discovered by accident, kind of like penicillin and the world of antibiotics. Minoxidil was originally used for treating high blood pressure or hypertension. The hair benefit was discovered as a “side effect” of treating high blood pressure. Nice side effect!
Well, mankind does not let sleeping dogs lie when we see an opportunity. Side effect is hair regrowth and slowing of hair loss, and men like to keep hair. Hmmm….yep, bet there’s a good place for this stuff, and VOILA! – Regaine was born.
Okay, okay…maybe that’s a little dramatized, but you get the picture, I hope. I’m just poking a little fun at the discovery of something that has been a dramatic life changer for many men, and being thankful someone thought to do something to bring it to the market. What they did was take the active blood pressure medication and reformulate it to make this top selling treatment, which is clinically proven and approved by the FDA.
So after it was discovered to stimulated body hair growth. A topical solution was developed which contained 2% Minoxidil and went on sale to the public in 1988. In 1996 the concentration was increased to 5% for men with the launch of ‘Extra Strength Solution’ (having a higher level of Minoxidil was found to have a more powerful effects on male scalps men but have little effect on women). They then developed an easy to apply Foam for men in 2006 which also contained 5%. Read more about minoxidil here.
Does It Work?
If you suffer from hereditary patter baldness (you have parents or siblings who are losing/have lost their hair too) then there is a very good chance (90% for foam, 80% for the topical solution) that Regaine will have a positive effect on you (slowing or stopping the loss of hair at the very least). For men, hereditary male pattern baldness is by far the most common form of alopecia.
The 5% Minoxidil topical solution has been recognised for many years as one of the most effective ways for men to stop losing their hair. Regaine’s claims that it is effective for 8 out of 10 men is well researched and beyond any doubt. The Foam has been on the market for only a few years in comparison so its efficiency is less concrete though it is unlikely to be less potent than the product it is trying to replace. To achieve these results you do need to use it as directed religiously: twice a day for at least 4 months.
Does It Fix All Hair Loss Problems?
In one word, no; it can’t fix everything. But, it can help many sufferers. Let me explain. There are several possible causes of hair loss:
- MPB (male pattern baldness) – genetic – MAIN culprit – androgenic alopecia
- Sudden baldness – could be extreme stress induced (can even happen overnight)
- Slow loss (but increased) over a couple of months – could be nutrition related
- Alopecia Areata – round, smooth patches – usually caused by stress & genetics
- Tinea Capitis – fungal infection like athlete’s foot- requires other treatment
So, you see, as much as I’d like to say that Regaine For Men can solve all our problems and woes for hair loss, it can’t. But, it can help a great percentage of u, and that’s what it’s here to do.
How Much Does It Cost?
If you buy it on the high street from Boots say you would probably pay the full £34.95 per tube of foam or bottle of solution (one months supply). Thankfully you find it for a lot less online. Buy in bulk and from the right website and you will currently pay less than £16 per month for Foam or Extra Strength Solution – that’s less than half the RRP. Check out the links at the top of the page for the latest price comparisons.
What Sort Of Results Can You Expect From Using The Foam Or Solution?
The get the most out of this product you need to do two things:
- Firstly you need to apply it twice a day, every day. This one is very important. If you only follow it occasionally the results will be disappointing. Try to make it part of your daily routine, using it at the same time – morning and evening – every day.
- Be very patient. When you start using Regaine you have to understand that you are in it for the long haul. Most men who use it don’t see any re-growth for 16 weeks (4 months). But once it starts, keep using it and it will keep growing, stop using it and all of the hair you gained will be lost within a few months.
Clinical tests have show that it will stop any further loss of hair for 80% of men.
Thus has been show in studies to be more effective than the Extra Strength Solution. 90% of men reported a halt or reversal in their hair loss after 4 months of use.
How Does It Work?
The exact way that it is able to help stop hair falling out and promote growth is not totally understood. Like I said, it was discovered as a side effect of something else. So, they don’t exactly know why it works; only that it does. Of course, there are hypothesis and all of that, but bottom line is – it works, plain and simple.
Having said that the scientists have their theories. The active ingredient in Regaine, minoxidil is thought works in two ways. First it revitalises your follicles and then regrows your hair. It will (well for 80-90% of you) reactivate the growth cycle for dormant and shrunken follicles. Within a few month you will notice you have thicker and stronger hair. It is a step by step process:
- Apply Regaine to your balding areas twice per day. The minoxidil will penetrate into the scalp.
- Your thin strands will start falling out at an increased rate during the first two weeks. Don’t worry, this is a good sign. They need to make way for you new, thicker and stronger hairs.
- The minoxidil stimulate shrunken follicles so they are able to regrow thicker strands.
- These larger, healthier follicles grow thick strands though you may not notice them for the first few months.
It is important that you continue using Regaine even after you have obtained the desired results. If you stop the application you will lose all that you have gained within a few months.
Here are the basics of what you and I have to do to make it work for us, though. Even though you will be excited to get started once you get the product in your hands, be sure to read the directions first. This is always important with any new product use.
Here’s some of what you need to know:
- You only use one (1) ml 2 times a day
- Apply directly to the scalp hair loss area
- Don’t think more is better – it’s not
- You must continue use it to keep the benefits
So, it’s pretty easy and pretty straightforward. The cool thing is, if you use it as directed, it works for a lot of men. If you or someone you know has suffered from hereditary baldness Regaine can help. Sometimes these things just seem to creep up on us.
Is It For You?
If you’re a victim, or know someone who is, then you understand the desire to do something about it. Yeah, I know that bald is sexy and all that stuff, but it seems like that only works for some guys. Besides, some of us like our hair, right?
Although some people may think hair loss is just a bi-product of ageing that we have to deal with, that is not always the case. The issue can start at any stage of life. Maybe it can’t always be “fixed”, but sometimes, with the help of this treatment, that beautiful shiny head can be held at bay for a while longer, if you want it to be.
I’ve kind of put this together so you can understand what Regaine is and what it isn’t. This can be a trying time in a man’s life, and for sure you want to know what opportunities are out there to help you.
I always shoot straight from the hip when I’m talking about various products, and this one is no exception. Regaine is absolutely wonderful for many men and women, but it can’t fix every problem.
